The Rotoroa Lodge, Zeland is a truly romantic place where fly fishing couples land record brown trout and spend time in a lovely, romantic setting far away from the fast pace of life. | |

| Danielle Yesavage wondered if it was true! A truly romantic place where her doctor husband Jerry could fly fish for record brown trout and where she could take a respite from her teaching just to spend time with him in a lovely romantic setting far away from the fast pace of Stanford, CA.
They found that combination in New Zealand’s top trout fishing destination, the heavenly Rotoroa Lodge. Jerry and Danielle often return to Rotoroa to rejuvenate and calm their hectic lives.
Danielle literally purrs when she speaks of Lake Rotoroa Lodge nestled in the northern extremity of New Zealand’s Southern Alps. Her memories include the lovely cozy Victorian rooms with brass beds and luxurious feather quilts encompassing all the modern in room conveniences one could imagine, gourmet meals and fine wines in a romantic dining room overlooking beautiful Lake Rotoroa.
This 1920's Victorian, far from the maddening crowds, is rated one of the world’s most elegant retreats for world-class flyfishing. Jerry Yesavage, who has returned there 9 times, rates the fly fishing on crystal clear streams as the best he has experienced in his extensive worldwide pursuit of large brown trout. Over 26 streams are accessible by road, and another 18 by helicopter, taking him to some great wilderness locations. Rotoroa Lake and various streams produce 4 to 6 pound brown trout in abundance.
As Jerry states, “The Average size of fish is 4-6 lbs depending on the river- some rivers have a lot of 3-5 lb trout, others fewer at 4-6 lbs. Typical day is fishing to10-20 fish, then depending on how well you cast, hooking 30-70% (if the first cast is right over the fish 70%, less if it takes several tries), then you land 10-90% depending on how well you play big fish. So in theory you can land 10 a day but 4 is more likely for the unprepared angler.
The season begins on the 1st of October and ends on the 30th of April. Dry fly and lightly weighted small wet patterns test the skills of the most discerning angler. Recommended rods are in the 5-7 weight range, (Jerry prefers a 6 weight) length 8 to 9 feet.
If you are like the Yesavages you may want to spend some time on the trails of the unspoiled fairyland of nearby Nelson Lakes National Park. You may choose romantic canoeing for two in the Lodge’s Canadian canoe. It’s great fun to arrange for a leisurely wine tasting excursion through Marlborough’s wonderful wineries. The well-maintained 9-hole golf course may tempt you not to mention the tours available through farms and local craft’s shops.
To book a reservation, email the lodge directly at enquiries@rotoroa.co.nz. Mention www.gillandfinn.com in your reservation and receive an elegant surprise basket and fine champagne in your room on your arrival, complements of the management.
